Mazembe Vol. 2
« on: May 13, 2013, 02:30:46 pm »
This is out:
http://www.emusic.com/album/orchestra-super-mazembe/mazembe-45rpm-vol-2/14033335/?siteID=je6NUbpObpQ-ntsSP7aV_TUQ0ZyGz1rAVQ
The music is great and the sound quality is first rate (much better than Sonodisc, though that isn't so bad)

I don't know why many lovers of Congolese music haven't paid more attention to the great musicians, many originally from Zaire, based in Kenya. This group contains some of the best.

I didn't expect this to appear until the end of the month but I'm glad it's finally out.  This compilation brings together the last of the Mazembe singles that did not appear on Kenyan LPs (the last singles that I could find at any rate.  I think there are still a few I have never heard).  These were indeed "singles" but I have edited the A and B sides together and I spent a lot of time in going over every second of the audio to correct defects and get the sound quality to audiophile standards.  Hope you'll enjoy them.

Will certainly enjoy them. Looking forward to listening Ndona,Aleisia and Mungu Mukubwa as I cannot remember them. Madjo did a nice one on Presto, what is he up to these days? I last heard he relocated to the the US of A.
Good job Doug.

I haven't talked to Madjo since the 1990s.  At that time he was in San Diego, California and training to be an auto mechanic.  He was also singing with a local soukous band called Bitoto.  In the mid-80s I used to go see him on Chiromo Road with Zaiken at, I think it was called, the Swiss Chalet (just up from Club 1900).

Doug, thanks for the update on Madjo Maduley 'Abdallah'. I think him alongside Rondo Kandolo, Fataki Lokassa 'Masumbuko ya Dunia', Jose Okello and Kalombo Mwanza have unfairly been overlooked on their participation in recording some of the greatest hits of Super Mazembe.

Love hearing  Samba Mapangala's voice on "Sala Keba." That song really seems like one of his creations.
Doug, any chance Les Kinois could be among your next projects?

That is a great idea!  I'll see what I can do to make it happen.
