Music Format
« on: August 05, 2013, 06:06:58 pm »
I was wondering

if there is an album that is available in LP, 7in etc, cassette and CD,

which one do you get?

The LP is the original stuff, original cover etc and rare - but usually not in the best condition (both cover and disc)

but the CD is not original - it is a remake of the original stuff.

Cassette is also original not remake and rare.

I buy the LP when possible. Even the best compilations of music on CD are compiled by somebody else who may not share your preferences and you miss out on some great songs. Even some of the best reissue labels cut songs short, If you want the original, buy the original.
As for cassettes, you have to take care of them and maintain them and a lot of times the recordings have a lot of hiss.

There is a place in Berkley California that has the best selection of albums I have ever seen. I bought several when I was there I have no played about 3 or 4 still in cello wrap but if it was a choice def the original album But I will not buy one used if its full of scratches and skips I'm not getting anything I  can't use and no sense saving something useless for posterity..

I will find the name of the store

Yeah. I know the place. There is another like it in the Haight in San Franciso called Amoeba Records. It's an enormous place, inside what was once a huge bowling alley.

I was referring to complete albums.

Yes, when it comes to compilations, It is best to get the LP even if it is not in the best condition.

An example is I recently came upon the

Koffi Olomide - Magie LP. Which I believe is the way it was originally released with the cover and everything.

I already have the Magie VHS so was thinking should I get it as it the original and rare. It is the CD that is common not the LP.

These 2 do not seem to have African stuff.

I searched for Olomide, Longomba, Ochieng and Olaiya

and nothing came up.

They did once. There were about 4 or 5 whole aisles.

For original albums I would choose the LP.
Sometimes, when I already have the CD and I chance upon the LP, and it isn't too expensive, I'd buy the LP anyway. I've bought them used and scratchy, with sleeves ruined by moist and mice, just hoping they wouldn't sound too bad... which eventually turned out reasonably alright, most of the time.
So yes, I'd go for the vinyl format.

Like the Magie LP was not in the best condition, but the fact that that is the original release made me get it.

Even though I do not have the equipment to play LP, 7in and all those format.

I gues I have to go to a music store for them to put it on CD
