Tabu Ley Rochereau
« on: January 06, 2013, 01:19:52 pm »
Today on Facebook I was listening to Tabu Ley Rochereau on Deezer. Really paying attention to his music. When he was doing his duo with others and on his own. I have always liked him but I have an enormous amount of respect for the man and his music  Say what you will but Tabu Ley is brilliant. He has amassed an incredible repertoire of albums. One of my all time favourites has always been MUZINA- some don't realize that it is a religious song. This song alone can be an inspiration to go to church!

Tabu Ley was my real introduction to Congolese music. The first Congolese album I bought was his ISA album with the song KAFUL MAYAY on it.
I liked it so much I went back later that day and bought the TANGO YA BA VIEUX KALLE No.2 album. I was just a kid and ISA was brand new. Must have been '73 or '74...
I have a LOT of his albums now. His music has had an enormous influence on my life.

Sometimes I get mad when some folks say that Tabu Ley only had good music when he was with Mbilia Bel. I find that claim so pathetic. Tabu ley made several songs sans Mbilia Bel. I don't hate Mbilia Bel but she was not that impressive in my view. Like the one you posted Alicia, that song was released in 1994 (when I was 1 year old). I even knew this song back then. I loved it. That was 7 years after Mbilia Bel left him. Tabu Ley even made great songs without Bel during the 1980s.

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS ONE? I certainly do? I loved it from the day I heard and never got tired of it? I love it. Unlike most singers, Tabu Ley can sing by himself and make a great record. No need for anything but just Tabu Ley's voice is enough for me. Just check this song of how TABU LEY is the attention. I don't need to tell you. You will figure out. Hear it here
