I think this is a difference in generations:  Most of the DJs today were only small children or weren't even born when the original versions of classic makossa (or rumba, or benga, or (fill in the blank) style were popular).  In other words, they don't have an appreciation of the cultural context of this music.  I'm with you.  I would much prefer to hear the original versions of this music but, in fairness to the DJs, most of the people they play music for are younger than me and just see this music as the music of their parents (even grandparents) now.
