Who is Ahmed Jan Amour ?
« on: May 24, 2013, 10:56:33 am »
I heard this YouTibe a few months ago and I certainly liked his sound because it reminded me of Koffi and I love all the early Koffi music.
Is he a wanna be? A Koffi clone? As they say Impersonating someone can be taken as flattery....

I like him....He has a new CD

Congolese music has very interesting history. Having said that you will find it difficult to believe what I am going to tell you about Ahmed 'Muana Tchatcho'. :D
I really like attending live Congolese concerts on weekends for many years. One of my favourites band resident in Mombasa is Amitie musica. A couple of years back they were the hottest band in the island of Mombasa and many aspiring musicians would like to be part of them. It was prestigious to perform with them and many of the current bands based in Mombasa are either former members of Mombasa or those who could not join Amitie Musica.  At one time (2005-2008) there was a light skinned young man who would join the band to sing Koffi songs. The band president Crispin Tambwe would crowd cheer on the young man whom he would always introduce as 'Koffi's son' due to his voice.. ;D
Like many members before who have left the band many forgot about him when he left since he was not in any of the  'offshoot' bands in Mombasa. Sometimes later I started seeing some you tube clips of the the same guy but more mature! I asked Chrisprin whether that was the young man we knew as Koffi's son and he confirmed that it was actually him! He had traveled all the way to Kinshasa to join Quater Latin but didn't succeed. He didn't give up though and proceeded to record his own tchatcho songs.
According to Crispin, he is the one who encouraged Ahmed to sing Koffi's songs since he realized that he naturally had a voice similar to Koffi. He was his neighbour in Ganjoni area which has a high population of Congolese living in Mombasa and Ahmed was living with his sister. His parents are Congolese of Arabian origin but had fled to Uganda from Kisangani at some time.
You can hear Ahmed giving a shoutout to Crispin Tambwe papa na David (his son) in the clip Amour from 3'15"

Next I will post a Clip of Ahmed performing with Amitie Musica. If you want more details from Crispin Tambwe I can PM his number.... He speaks French, English (good enough) and Lingala
